What is Panthenol? 

Defined by Healthline, Panthenol is a chemical substance made from pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B-5. This ingredient is naturally occurring in many different sources of food as well as in various cosmetics and care products we use daily. Look for it in your products by any of its names; dexpanthenol, D-pantothenyl alcohol, butanamide, alcohol analog of pantothenic acid, provitamin B-5. 

 

What does Panthenol do? 

Panthenol is sold as a vitamin supplement as well as commonly found in skin, nail, and hair care products. Vitamin B-5 is essential for healthy skin, nails, and hair as it makes a great moisturizer as well as a softening, soothing, strengthening, and anti-irritant agent. 

 

Skin

It is used in skin care to help build up a barrier against irritation and reduce water loss for maximum hydration. You’ll often find it in cleansers and lotions as well as in some lipsticks, mascaras and foundations. 

Hair

In hair care, Panthenol is a terrific ingredient to look for as it helps boost shine, strength and increase softness. It’s also a great ingredient to lock in your hair's moisture and shield it from environmental damage as well as reducing and improving the look of thinning hair. With Panthenol being a do-it-all ingredient for hair, you can find it in shampoos, conditioners and leave-in treatments. 

Nails

For your nails, Panthenol can be found in your nail treatments as it hydrates, strengthens and reduces nail breakage.
