Keep Your Spring Cleaning Green With These 5 Essential Oils

Spring is here! With the warmer weather, longer days, and flowers starting to bloom, we often find the energy to say goodbye to winter and welcome Spring with a deep clean. From disinfecting door handles to decluttering the storage closet- we have compiled a list of the most effective essential oils to keep your home chemical and toxin free while you spring clean this year.

1. Tea Tree Oil (melaleuca oil)

Tea Tree Oil is one of the strongest oils to clean with as it fights germs, bacteria, and viruses, and deters bugs. This antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral mixture is the ultimate solution for fighting off nasty bacteria that threaten you and your family.

We love to use Tea Tree Oil as a substitute for an everyday spray cleaner as it’s very effective to remove mildew, mold, and germs around the house- especially in the bathroom and kitchen areas.

 All-purpose Spray Cleaner:

2 cups of white vinegar

2 cups of water

15-20 drops of lemon essential oil

20-25 drops of tea tree essential oil

Mix ingredients in a spray bottle and shake to combine. Use as a spray cleaner in the kitchen or bathroom.

2. Lemon Oil (Citrus Limon Peel Oil)

Not only is Lemon essential oil great for cleaning due to its fresh, citrus, and invigorating scent- but for its antibacterial and antiviral dirt-dissolving power. Use it diluted in a spray bottle with white vinegar for a great all-purpose cleaner, or use it to shine up hardwood or polish furniture.

Citrusy Lemon Scrub:

1 cup of baking soda

1/4 cup of liquid castile soap

10-15  drops of lemon essential oil

8-10  drops of lime essential oil

8-10 drops of orange essential oil

Mix together to form a paste. Apply to stovetop or sinks with a rag or sponge to clean stubborn gunk. Rinse with warm water.

3. Eucalyptus Oil (Eucalyptus globulus)

This essential oil is not only great for its cleaning abilities, but it’s also a heavy-hitter when it comes to defense against many viral infections. We recommend using it around the home and diffusing it regularly to help clean the air and improve allergy symptoms.

 Invigorating Deep Clean Scrub:

1/2 cup of baking soda

1/3 cup of natural liquid dish soap

1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide

3/4 cup of distilled water

30-35 drops of eucalyptus essential oil

Mix together in a squeezable bottle. Squirt in the toilet, shower, or other dirty crevices. Scrub with a brush. Let stand for 20 minutes. Rinse.

4. Lavender oil (Lavandula Angustifolia Flower Extract)

Like the previous oils in this list, Lavender Oil makes a great anti-bacterial addition to your spring cleaning. It is also anti-odor, which means it’s perfect to add to your space to clean while killing odors like sports equipment or stinky shoes. Lavender is known for its calming and relaxing abilities, so we love to use it in the bedroom to unwind before bed.

Relaxing air freshener:

3/4 cup of distilled water

2 tablespoons of vodka (optional)

10-15 drops of lavender essential oil

Combine in a spray bottle and shake to combine. Spray throughout the house to eliminate odors.

5. Cinnamon oil (Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Bark Oil)

Like Lavender oil, Cinnamon oil makes for a great disinfectant while doubling as a fantastic odor-killer. Disclaimer: be sure to avoid contact with pure cinnamon oil, as it is known to cause irritation or reaction on skin.

Yummy Smelling Mold-Away Spray:

1 cup of water

1/2 cup of white vinegar

20-25 drops of cinnamon oil

5-10 drops of rosemary

5-10 drops of lemon

Shake in a spray bottle to combine. Use on mold, mildew, and throughout the house.
