Everything You Need to Know About Double Cleansing

What is double cleansing?

Double cleansing has always seemed to have been a part of Korean skincare routines but the term has only made its way to North America recently. Just like it sounds, double cleansing is the act of cleansing your face twice to ensure all makeup, sunscreen, and daily irritants are removed from your face.

How do you double cleanse?

Dermatologists recommend beginning your cleanse with an oil-based product to be the first step in effectively removing “heavier” products such as makeup, SPF, and daily irritants. Using a beauty oil like Marula or Squalane or one of our oil-based serums like Restorative Serum work well at nourishing the skin while removing tough impurities- even waterproof mascara!. Apply a few drops to your fingertips and gently massage oil over your entire face, concentrating on the eyes and lip areas if there is makeup.

Because these oil-based products are generally thicker and don’t come off the easiest with just water, it is recommended to follow the oil with a gentle cream-based cleanser. Scentuals Anti-Aging and Radiance Facial Cleansers are 100% natural and perfect to cleanse the skin without stripping its moisture. Apply 1-2 pumps of the cleanser to your fingertips and massage the product into your face to fully remove impurities. Once finished massaging into your face, rinse off thoroughly with water and pat your face dry with a clean towel.

Is double-cleansing suitable for everyone?

Although double cleansing is a good practice to thoroughly cleanse and remove impurities from your face, it can cause further irritation for some. Those with skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or extreme dryness have to be cautious when looking to double cleanse, as many products can be drying and over-cleansing can cause damage to your natural moisture barrier. If you do have extremely dry or damaged skin, look for cream cleansers with deeply nourishing ingredients- such as Organic Argan, Organic Avocado, and Olive oils in our Anti-Aging and Radiance Cleansers, to cleanse skin without stripping your skin at all.

Does it matter what cleansers I use?

It doesn’t necessarily matter which specific cleansers you use, but there are some ingredients you should avoid when double cleansing- especially if your skin is dry or damaged, to begin with. Dermatologists recommend avoiding formulas with active ingredients like exfoliating acids or benzoyl peroxide when double cleansing and instead look for words like “gentle, nourishing, cream-based” when looking for the last cleanser in your double cleansing routine.

Whether you typically have oily, dry, acne-prone, or combo skin- we always recommend using a product to nourish, restore and maintain your moisture barrier- especially after double cleansing. Scentuals Anti-Aging and Radiance Facial Creams are 100% natural and are formulated to be gentle and hydrate with Organic Argan, Organic Avocado, and Olive oils while Green Tea extract protects from free radicals and pure essential oils work to increase cellular regeneration, balance oil production, and reduce the look of wrinkles.

Our Beauty Oil Blends are not only great for double cleansing but are great to use as the final step in your skincare routine. They add deeply nourishing ingredients which hydrate, restore and help improve various skin conditions and signs of aging. Apply beauty oil(s) to your face at night, after applying moisturizer, to lock in the skin benefits and absorb overnight to reveal healthy, hydrated skin in the morning.
